Lions day with the united nations 2026

Lions from across Lions International – British Isles, including several members from our district, gathered at the Palace of Westminster, London for this year’s annual Lions Day in Committee Room 14, House of Commons. We were honoured to hear from Per Kærager Christensen, an international guest Lion, who spoke about the longstanding partnership between Lions and the United Nations. Did you know that Lions Clubs International helped the United Nations with their Charter in 1945? As the only service organisation with official consultative status, Lions continues to collaborate with the UN on global humanitarian issues, including health, education, and youth.

Laura Baxter MBE, CEO of Special Olympics GB, together with Special Olympics swimmer Taylor MacKenzie, inspired us with their passion for the power of youth, inclusion, opportunity, and hope for the future. We were also privileged to hear from Nicole and Janie from The Carter Center, who shared insights into the remarkable humanitarian legacy of US President and Lion Jimmy Carter, and the organisation’s ongoing commitment to human rights, peace, democracy, and global health initiatives. Lions from across the British Isles have been making a tangible difference, particularly in supporting refugees from Ukraine, both at home and abroad.

We celebrated the launch of Lions’ inspiring youth programme, Changing Tomorrow Today, and encourage you to watch this space for updates in the coming weeks. The event also saw the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating Lions’ commitment to those who have served our country and the Commonwealth. Finally, we congratulated the British Isles winners of the Peace Poster & Peace Essay Competition, recognising the creativity and vision of our younger generation. Events like this serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of service and the incredible difference Lions can make when we work together.
