Childhood Cancer

The next generation’s ability to thrive is closely tied to the supports of the local community. Lions and Leos have seen and felt the effects of cancer on children and their families, and continue to bring hope through tangible service and support.

Lions and Leos, with the support of Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), provide support for the needs of children and families affected by childhood cancer.

Childhood Cancer Facts

  • 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes.
  • 13% increase in incidence of childhood cancer over the last 20 years.
  • 6 years average age at diagnosis of children with cancer.
  • >90% of childhood cancer deaths occur in low resource settings.

We Have a Plan

Young Lives v Cancer has been very active in making changes and coming up with and implementing more strategies to be able to deliver a wider range of care to the children and families they support.

The family is a nucleus around which most communities are built. The next generation’s ability to thrive is closely tied to the supports of the local community. Lions and Leos have seen and felt the effects of cancer on children and their families, and continue to bring hope through tangible service and support.

  • Launch a Children and Young People’s Cancer Plan.
  • Create a Travel Fund so no child or young person struggles with the cost of getting to treatment.
  • Improve benefits so they work quicker, and are easier to access.
  • Boost mental health support for young cancer patients and their families.
  • Improve the diagnosis experience of children and young people with cancer and ensure they are supported after treatment.

Alongside their supporters, they have been campaigning for change so children and young people with cancer and their families get the support they need, as soon as they need it.

Through the campaign these are the changes that the Charity has and is still fighting for:-

  • 4000 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year. They need a Children and Young People’s Cancer Plan.
  • We want the next UK Government to stand up for children and young people with cancer and work with us.
  • Children and young people with cancer and their families are Running On Empty because of travel costs.
  • From loss of income to higher heating bills, cancer comes with a financial cost. They are calling for better financial support.
  • Hospital Parking should be free across the UK. Plans were made to make it happen, but they're now under threat.
  • The costs of cancer go far beyond just the financial. There are also the costs to children, young people and families.
  • They carry out research so our campaigns reflect the experiences of children and young people with cancer and their families.

Together, our voices can be heard by government and decision makers across the UK to make change happen.

They wrote a letter to the new Prime Minister asking as many people as possible to sign their name to support their campaign for change.
